Kilmore in a heat wave.

Thursday 29th January 2009, Kilmore.

How time flies when you are enjoying yourself: It is hard to believe that we have been here for nearly seven weeks now. We are at present in the middle of a what looks like a week long heat wave with temperatures hitting the low 40’s for a couple of days and for a few more to come, it is now that we are very glad we fitted the air-con a couple of years ago. The heat is a rather dry heat and it is almost tolerable sitting in the shade of a tree with the breeze blowing, but not anywhere as good as sitting inside the van with the air on. Matt and I had planned on doing some work on their block during the late afternoon over the next couple of days but I now doubt if it will happen now due to the heat.

I have learned a lesson over the past week or so regarding servicing of ‘Tilly’ the truck. Let me put the reminder that this is basically the first new vehicle I have ever owned, with the exception that it was a demo vehicle before I bought it, and it is also the first diesel car I have ever owned. In the past twelve months of owning the vehicle I have been in areas when the services were due where there were no Ford dealers, so I used other mechanics for the services. When these were done my stipulation was that the services were to be book services thinking that if they weren’t fully familiar with the service requirements that they would look at my book, which was made available, but I have now learned that this was not the case as it has become apparent that several things have not been done in the previous services that were required. One very important thing was a check on valve clearance adjustments at 20K, and it was not done. I have since learned that this in particular is very important with diesel engines. I was also under the misbelief that dealers would probably be more expensive. After having several conversations with the local Ford dealers over the past couple of weeks here at Kilmore I have now decided that it is almost imperative that services be done at a dealer as they do have quality assurances to comply with when doing services so they will be done correctly and thoroughly, and it turns out they aren’t any more expensive than any other mechanic, with me also being happier that a proper job is done. So after having the car serviced at the local dealer today, from now on I will make a big effort to use dealers for servicing in the future, after all if I expect a long life from the vehicle the servicing has to be done properly.

Linda was put on the plane this morning and last I heard she has safely arrived in Tassie, I guess I will hear more when she settles in. I received an email from an old friend today who obviously reads the web site in depth, and had a query about a comment I made about giving up smoking while in WA and didn’t follow up on what happened, so here is the story. The tobacco I smoke is extremely hard to purchase once one travels away from major areas, and in the past I have arranged for a tobacconist to post me some upon request. Before the recent trip to WA I made a statement to Linda that “If I can’t buy tobacco I am not getting any sent on, I will have to give it up?, and would you believe it was even harder making a purchase in WA than anywhere else, even in Perth. When we reached Carnarvon in July last year I ran out of tobacco and had nowhere to make another purchase, so there was no decision but to give it up. I lasted until September when we arrived back in the Perth area at Mandurah and had to go make another purchase. I got too irritable and started to suffer ‘road rage’ rather badly so I decided that I would rather be relaxed than in that frame of mood, and there was no option but to resume the vice that I enjoyed anyway. I also think, or know, that Linda is happier that I have resumed.

We had a big family day yesterday with all the local family coming out for the day. There was a kids day out at an animal care farm called Edgar’s Mission and it was arranged for a family outing there, well for the women and kids anyway, as myself and the two Matt’s, son and son-in-law, went to Matt and Nelle’s block to do some work. Son Matt and family actually came out the night before and stayed over in a cabin so we got to see a bit more of them as we don’t get to their place that often being the other side of Melbourne. All had a good day, I think, and some prime time was spent all together before they all headed home. Linda is off to Tassie tomorrow for a week, so I am once again left to fend for myself. I would mention that with the things she has planned to do while there we apologise to those that she would have liked to visit but may not have the time.

Still not much to report on, I am sure you are not interested in every little detail of what we get up to, but we have spent time visiting family and spending time with the grand kids. I have also spent some time helping Nelle and Matt clearing their block ready for building and have enjoyed the exercise I have been getting, although at the time my body was telling me it wasn’t, and that will keep up as long as I have something to do there. We have also been looking around at different caravan parks we may wish to utilise next year when we return to Melbourne. Not that there is much wrong with the park at Kilmore but we may find somewhere else that is more suitable, having said that so far we have decided that Kilmore is the most suitable of what we have seen so far, but there is no harm in still looking.
