Bingara, still in NSW.

Tuesday 14th April 2009, Bingara.

As nice a place as Gunnedah is we found we were a little lost for things to do, especially seeing we were rained in for the past couple of days, so we have now moved on to Bingara (see Map) about 170K north of Tamworth on a road known as the Fossickers Way. We had heard about Bingara from several people and decided it would be somewhere new to visit. On our way here we did think that the countryside was much better than we have seen for a while on our travels, even though the weather was rather overcast and our views were somewhat restricted. Some of the towns we passed through seemed worth a visit, so Linda was heard to say “This area looks like an area we could spend some time, in the future, just cruising and staying at these small towns

Sunday 12th April 2009, Gunnedah.

We look like being in Gunnedah for a couple of extra days as we are rained in, and we don’t move in the rain unless essential. It has been forecast for showers for the past few days but we got basically nothing at all, and it is forecast for rain tomorrow and I guess it has arrived a little early, so if it is still raining in the morning we will simply book in here for an extra day until it is fine enough to move.

Thursday 9th April 2009, Gunnedah.

Went to another town lookout called Pensioners Hill today and this is one of the better town lookouts I have seen so far, being close to town and at a reasonable hight giving some quite good views of the town. Unfortunately though this is about all we intend doing while here because as I said there is not a great deal to do here for the tourist, now we have two more days to just relax. There is a rural museum with a large display of old tractors and such but we have seen all we need to see along that line during our travels, so we gave it a miss.

Wednesday 8th April 2009, Gunnedah.

Gunnedah is a very nice place, and a good caravan park, but there doesn’t seem to be much to do in the area for sightseeing apart from the few things around town, so it is a good place for a few days of not much to do. There is Lake Keepit about 40K east of town, that we went for a drive to see yesterday, and it could be quite good for a stay if one was into fishing and water sport. It has a couple of caravan parks on the lakes edge, when full, that are reasonably cheap and we thought of actually going there for a few days when we leave here but there are a couple of negatives:- the water in the lake is very low, as are all inland lakes at the moment, the sites for the caravan are a brown gravel and on a slope which could make it difficult to level it up, and the whole area seems to be covered in that horrible Bindy grass with big spiky thorns, so we have decided to give it a miss. It is unfortunate because it did initially look like a good place to sit and relax for a few days, oh well we will make up for it by possibly getting to the Sunshine Coast a few days early. I went for my usual walk around town taking photos today, one thing I am surprised I didn’t do when we were here last time, and a sign of how nice the town is by the number of pics I took.

Monday 6th April 2009, Gunnedah.

Gunnedah is about 200K NE of Gilgandra (see map) and about 75K west of Tamworth, and we intend being here for a week. After stopping at Gilgandra we realised that we didn’t enjoy our last visit there because of the ants and thorns in the grass, so we have again said we won’t stay there again, this time we might remember. After the very short time we have been at Gunnedah we can see why we wanted to come back for a longer visit, but after being here for a week will tell.
